First Aid at Work

Course Overview

Course Structure

  • This course must be at least 18 contact hours and run over a minimum of 3 days classroom training.
  • Or alternately you can now complete two days of classroom training after completing one days online course
  • The HSE strongly recommend that all first aiders complete an annual first aid refresher course

Course Content

Unit 1 – Emergency First Aid in the Workplace

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Be able to assess an incident
  • Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive casualty
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty who is in shock
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with minor injuries

Unit 2 – Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury in the Workplace

  • Be able to conduct a secondary survey
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  • Be able to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected head and spinal injuries
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with suspected chest injury
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with burns and scolds
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with an eye injury
  • Know how to provide first aid to a casualty with sudden poisoning
